Contacting your Texas state legislators is a powerful way to advocate for policies that will ensure safe, stable, and affordable housing for all Texans. Legislators need to hear from their constituents to understand the impact of their policymaking on the lives of everyday Texans.

Whether you’re a Brazos Valley resident or simply a Texan who is passionate about your neighbors being able to afford a good home, we’ve made it easy for you to contact your legislators and make your voice heard.

State legislators representing the Brazos Valley

Step 1: Find your state legislator

To contact your state legislators, you need to know who they are. Use the Texas Legislature’s online tools to find your representatives and senators based on your address. It only takes a minute.

Step 2: Choose your contact method

There are several ways to reach out to your Texas state legislators. Choose the one that works best for you:

  • Phone Call: A personal phone call is THE most powerful way to make an impact in the halls of the Texas Capitol. Speak directly to a legislative aide or leave a message for the legislator about the bill or issue you care about. Did you know that it only takes about 12 phone calls about an issue to really get your legislator’s attention??
  • Email: A quick and effective way to communicate your message is by sending an email. Use the provided contact form on your legislator’s website or send a direct email.
  • Postal Mail: If you prefer to send a letter, be sure to include your full name, address, and clear points about the issue you’re addressing. A tall stack of letters from different constituents about the same issue or bill also has a powerful effect on whether this is an issue your legislator should pay attention to.
  • Social Media: Many legislators are active on social media platforms like X (Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram. Contacting them through a direct message or a public post can be another way to get their attention.

Step 3: Craft your message

When contacting your legislator, be clear, concise, and respectful. Here are some tips for an effective message:

  • Introduce Yourself: Let them know you’re a constituent and explain why the issue of affordable housing is important to you.
  • Be Specific: Clearly state what action you want them to take (e.g., support a specific bill, vote for housing initiatives, etc.).
  • Personalize: Share a personal story or an example of how housing issues have impacted you or your community. Legislators care about real stories.
  • Call to Action: Ask them to take action and let them know how much their support will mean for Texas families.

Step 4: Follow up

After you contact your Texas state legislator, follow up to keep the conversation going. Call again or send a polite email asking if they’ve had a chance to review your request. Legislators are busy, but persistence shows that this issue matters to their constituents.
